What Is a Buried Treasure Map and How Does It Work
Unlike a Map, a Buried Treasure Map isn't meant to be used as a guide on how to get back home. It still functions as a normal map would, but instead of showing your location, it'll lead you to Buried Treasure that's indicated with a giant red X.
How to Find a Buried Treasure Map
To find a treasure map, you'll need to go to a water biome to search for a shipwreck. Although it is rare, shipwrecks are sometimes known to spawn on beach shores too. The safest bet is to go to the water biome and find some dolphins. Once you do, kill some Salmon and Cod and feed them to the dolphins raw.

Now that you fed the dolphins, they'll start leading you to either a Shipwreck or Underwater Ruins. You may need to feed them a couple of fishes before they fully lead you to one or the other.

You can get lucky too and find one by naturally exploring the waters. Sometimes they'll be easy to spot because the ship mast will be peaking out of the water. But if it's not peaking out of the water, just keep an eye out, and you'll notice the ship standing out from the rest of the ocean environment.
For both Java and Bedrock, it's the same odds of finding a Treasure map in a shipwreck.

How to Use a Buried Treasure Map
Now that you have the map, you'll notice a few things. For starters, your icon will be far off in the corner, and the map will be brownish with a drawing of the land and a giant red X. As you get closer to the red X, you'll notice that the Treasure Map will begin to look more and more like a normal Map.
Once you're above the red X, you'll need to start digging in the general area to find the treasure. It's worth mentioning that the treasure won't always be directly on the red X. So as long as you're digging the general area of the X, you'll find it in no time.
